What Diesel Exhaust Fluid does
DEF (also sold as AdBlue and specified as AUS 32) is a 32.5% solution of high-purity urea in demineralised water. It is dosed into the exhaust stream ahead of the SCR catalyst, where it converts nitrogen oxides (NOx) into nitrogen and water vapour. Euro 5 and Euro 6 diesel engines will not meet their emissions limits — and will derate — without it.

32.5% urea by weight in demineralised water — the eutectic mix used worldwide.
Purity matters
Off-spec fluid can foul the SCR catalyst and the dosing injector, which is why documentation travels with the batch.
